The first mention of the 50,000 number that I saw was in the press release of November 22, 1999 dealing with PFE.

So far I have not seen or read any analysis concerning the implications of those filings. IMHO I seriously doubt INCY will get the exclusive patents on 50,000 full length human genes. There have been a multitude of companies working on various parts of the project for years. The IP on full, partial and contested gene patents are a lawyer dream come true. This will take awhile to sort through.

Still the hope/intent is that the intellectual abyss of intellectual property rights will force/encourage Big Pharma and Academia into database subscriptions with INCY. I have not been able to elict any comment on this point from the thread here.

I have read many INCY reports detailing that INCY's next database iterations, LifeExpress, will deal with SNP's and their expression functions. BT Alex Brown thinks INCY will sign collaborations with Big Pharma once the SNP map/database hits critical mass. I am out of my league on that one, but this is an area where CRGN has been working for some time. Today it is racing ahead. Let the handicapping begin.

Cheers,
