None of the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution or the Bill of Rights are absolute. All are subject to reasonable restrictions. You may not shout "Fire" in a crowded theater, pornography is not protected by the First Amendment, etc. Certainly with rioting going on some restraint was necessary the quibble seems to be where the line gets drawn. Its also a bit of an unusual situation because of all the the muckity mucks in attendance, including our own beloved President Bubba. I believe the Mayor overstepped if he barricaded a fifty block area. Some more reasonable level of restraint would have been appropriate. I'm also very glad I didn't have to make the call. JLA
