India gets last two Sukhoi-30 K jets Moscow, December 2 (IANS) RUSSIA HAS completed the execution of a $300 million defence deal with India by delivering the last two of 10 Su-30 K fighter jets. A source in Irkutsk, the Siberian city where the Sukhoi series aircraft are built, told IANS that the last two jet fighters have been delivered to the Indian side. The contract for the aircraft was signed in October 1998. India has become the first country to procure the super class fighters, even before Russia's own air force has received them . Currently, China and Vietnam are engaged in intense lobbying for purchase of the coveted combat aircraft. Russia is also to supply to New Delhi 40 Su-30 MKI aircraft, a modified version of the Su-30 and considered the world's best jet fighter, under another deal . The Sukhoi-30, though a sophisticated combat aircraft, is not capable of launching attacks on ground targets and that is why, under the bilateral deal, Russia is installing equipment to make it a multi-purpose war plane. Under the contract, estimated at around $1.7 billion, the Su-30MKI aircraft would be equipped with the latest avionics, which Russia does not have. That is why French co. Sextant Avionics has been roped in. The old radars in the aircraft are being replaced with more powerful ones. In addition, K-58M and K-31 air-to-ground, and R-77 air-to-air missiles are being installed in the Su-30 MKI. Nearly 20 pc of the contract value would be spent on the radar systems and missiles. The contract, signed between Rosvooruzheniye, Russia's prime state-owned arms exporter, and India in 1996, is considered the "deal of the century" by military experts .
