[SEMICON 99] Computer Entertainment is Driving Semiconductor Industry, SCE President Says
December 3, 1999 (TOKYO) -- The computer entertainment industry is fast becoming the new force propelling development of LSI technology, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. chief executive officer Ken Kutaragi said.

Kutaragi made his comments in a keynote speech at the "SEMICON Japan 99" event being held at Makuhari Messe near Tokyo Dec. 1-3.

He said that until recently the LSI industry had been focusing almost solely on the PC market, but now, mainly thanks to SCE's unveiling of its PlayStation2 (PS2) game machine, that focus is shifting towards the computer entertainment sector.

In the speech, he called for closer cooperation from makers of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, saying that the time had come for them to work together in order to assure that adequate LSI technology is available to make possible ever more advanced computer entertainment devices in the future. He contrasted the fast-developing computer entertainment industry with the PC industry, pointing out that advances in LSI architecture design are becoming slower and therefore the pace at which better microprocessors were being developed was slowing considerably.

On the other hand, development of microprocessor and graphics LSI technology for computer entertainment devices is continuing to experience exponential jumps in growth, he said, and would go on doing so for the foreseeable future. He said that the Emotion Engine processor used in the PS2 machine was, like DRAM chips, undergoing several chip shrinkage per year and in five years would adopt the 0.1-micron rule.
