I am under the impression that the resources most of our elderly had put away would outlast their longevity. However, with the break-throughs in geriatric medicine and an inflationary economy up until Reagan's tenure began bringing interest rates down, our older(est) citizens probably thought they had adequate funding to get them through their lives. The "dipping" into the fund which was designed to protect the elderly has far outpaced the payouts to the retirees. However, it should also be noted (fairly or unfairly?) that a wife who contributes little to nothing to the system gets some measure (not sure what) of the husband's benefits. Why should she all things being equal.

But then, who could have foreseen all that has happened since.

I tried to make this point earlier. Thank you for making it so eloquently.

THe wife you speak of here..only contributes more taxpayers to the system...Is that not an honorable profession..And he gets
only a percentage of her husbands benefits..In Florida I have
widows who get the amazing sum of $200. per month to live on???? Now given the fact that the Men were forced out of their jobs at 65 ( to make way for their children) with the beautiful promise of SS with incremental
annual raises..and then the SS Fund was raided channeled into the General fund and on into the World Bank with much of the elders eanings. what then?????????????
