Investment Firm Will Advise Justice Dept. nytimes.com

Apologies for putting the cheeky Register ahead of my usual canonical source, the good gray Times.

Forcing Microsoft to rewrite certain contracts would not require much financial advice. But requiring it to auction the source-code for the Windows operating system -- an idea that has been favored by the states -- or breaking up the company, would require complicated financial analysis.

Microsoft executives, in arguing against some remedy ideas, have often said the government does not undertand the technological and financial implications of the proposals. The company said it had no opinion on today's announcment.

Greenhill & Company bills itself as an expert on technology. Most of the deals it has managed in this area have been on behalf of Compaq Computer, a close Microsoft ally.

Er, um, ally who had some testimony on the matter, as I recall. Anyway, this tea leaves business is a bit subtle for me.

Cheers, Dan.
