I am virtually positive that voice and HDR will NOT be on one channel using the 4500. What the 4500 will allow is to have "voice" (IS-95) and HDR in the same DEVICE, in the same PHONE. The referenced slides qualcomm.com do not state that HDR and IS-95 will be on the same channel, but rather they will be available in the same device. The device will have to switch frequencies to switch between an HDR and an IS-95 signal where both are present.

This would allow a phone which could be used for voice and as a modem for your labptop:
1) for voice on an IS-95 channel
2) for superfast HDR data to your PC by switching to an HDR channel

Additionally, for data-only devices, it would allow "dual-mode" analagous to CDMA cell phones supporting both CDMA digital and AMPS analog:
1) Superfast data when in an area served by an HDR channel
2) "Regular" data when in an area not yet served by HDR, but with data services available on IS-95.

which gives a MSM roadmap. Confirms my recollection, need a SM4500, due in Q2 2001, to mix voice and HDR on one channel. These are the view graphs from the HDR presentation and are well worth the time (loads slow, Acrobat file)... qualcomm.com;
