RIG Tax Stuff. Also a correction to my previous statement re Mavis

Hi Dave, Here's a link to my 10/18 post on the RIG board about this.
Message 11627867
Basically, Anyone who owned RIG at a profit as of the re-org date 5/14/99 must pay cap gains tax on the profit as of that date on this years income tax.
---This situation seemed such an oddity to tax guys I talked to, and RIG IR's statement that "Tax laws could be interpreted differently" raised an eyebrow for me. I decided to sell rather than find myself trying to explain RIG's reorg to a tax auditor who might never have heard of such things either.
---If you owned RIG at a loss as of 5/14 or if you bought after 5/14, there is no reason to give this any more thought. imho.

About Mavis-----
I mistakenly attributed to her a statement that RIG might dip below $25 when the new shrs are issued to SLB stkhldrs.
Actually, she was quoting someone else in her article who made that prediction. She did not. (Sorry, Mavis)

regards,
diana
