It's been a generation since we've had protests of this scope and character. The current set of folk calling the shots and those carrying the batons don't have a lot of experience with them (nor do the peaceful protesters). The police are trained to deal with citizen demonstrators and they are trained to deal with mobs and hooligans. It seems to me that the problem comes when you have a mixed group in a highly sensitive environment.

The previous generation of officialdom learned from Kent State and the Democratic National Convention. It seems to me that a lot has already been learned from this refresher course in Seattle and no one had to die for the lesson to be learned. If Seattle turns out to be a dress rehearsal for Y2K, I think it has already informed the preparation and contingency planning.

Reference your post---

"According to Defense Department documents
obtained by CNN, 131 U.S. Army, 27 U.S.
Air Force, and eight U.S. Navy personnel
were sent to Seattle to perform roles from
ordnance disposal to standing by for possible
chemical or biological attack by terrorist
groups."

We were expecting chemical or biological attacks, but we don't want citizens to have gas masks ?? Is there somthing wrong here?
