In fact, as many people age they become less materialistic because they want simpler lives with fewer possessions to maintain. Many aging people move to smaller houses or apartments, and get rid of a lot of the things that need dusting.

I understand up front this is what you've gathered from your own experiences, but I sure wish someone would tell my 77 year old antique buy and sell mother-in-law that older people stop accumulating and start un-accumulating. She gives us the crap she can't sell to make room for more "stuff".

With respect to her retired years, she is about to be paid the remaining amount of a 40 year (I didn't know there was such a thing) mortgage that was a contract for deed arrangement, much to her dislike because it will shorten the amount she will receive in the long run.

But that hasn't seemed to stop her desires regarding her plans for the money. SJ says she is planning on buying a new car! This will cut into the total sum by at least a third I figure. If she goes on a spending spree, guess who gets to take care of her when she can no longer to afford to take care of herself.

At least she can drive to the doctor's office in a nice set of wheels.
