(COMTEX) B: INDIA TO ACHIEVE $US5O BLN IN SOFTWARE EXPORTS BY 2010

NEW DELHI, Dec 03, 1999 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- India would achieve
its projected 4US50 billion export target by 2010, Information
Technology Secretary P V Jayakrishnan said.

"India will achieve the 50 billion dollar target for software export by
the next 10 years and policies are afoot in that direction",
Jayakrishnan told a seminar on Upgrading PCOs to Cyber Communication
Centres here.

The IT secretary said that local PCOs must upgrade themselves to
"multi-utility kiosks", which would be able to handle airlines, railway
and other bookings through the net.

The local operators' association should set a deadline to member
operators to expedite the process of converting local phone booths to
cyber cafes, he added.

S S Kohli, chairman and managing director of the Punjab and Sind Bank,
said the bank would offer Rs 175,000 to local operators to upgrade
their booths to cyber cafes out of the total cost of Rs 225,000 for the
upgradation.

The loan was repayable over four years in installments, he said. Three
branches in Delhi (north) would offer the scheme.
