Well, that's one of the attitudes toward the WTO, and certainly a credible one. But keep in mind that some of these groups have been objecting to the WTO for years, and nothing at all has happened. They plan the demonstrations, and bing, Clinton comes out with a speech supporting many of their views. Would he have done that if they had just kept writing letters, etc. behind the scenes?

Personally, I doubt it.

Actually, Clinton being Clinton, having said many times he is an active free trader (and acted as such) he really doesn't care about the issues of the protestors, but he cares about the environmental and big labor votes for Gore. That's why the sudden turnaround from ignoring these people for years to supporting some of their causes, even to making a broadly unpopular (to most of the 3rd world delegates) speech.

<But it seemed that in every "protestor on the street" interview I saw, the protestor was totally ignorant of why he was there.>

You must be watching television in an alternate universe, or be so prejudiced that you are no longer listening objectively. The protesters in Seattle (with the exception of the anarchists, who had nothing to do with them) were from very well organized union, environmental, and human rights groups/organizations. They had worked on coordinating their protests for months, and had sent large, well-organized contingents to Seattle. They had also instructed their membership in what their civil rights were, and in resisting arrest.

In any event, I saw interviews with street protesters, and they were very clear and quite articulate as to the purpose of their protests.
