Nokia ups mobile phone growth estimate
HELSINKI, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia said on Friday it had brought forward its estimate for the number of global mobile subscribers to one billion by the end of 2002 from its earlier estimate of 2003.

It said in a statement to be given by Nokia Chief Executive Jorma Ollila at Nokia's capital market day in Dallas that Nokia aimed for net sales growth of 30 to 40 percent in 2000, exceeding its long-term target of 25 to 35 percent.

``We continue to believe that the long-term growth target is achievable in 2001 and 2002,' it said.

``There will be continued emphasis on increasing market share in the mobile phone business, with Nokia's target being to grow faster than the market,' the statement said.

It quoted Ollila as anticipating the first orders for third-generation networks, which will allow for the transmission of higher amounts of data and things like video images, to be received in 2000.

Nokia said it was well-placed to exploit opportunities in the converging telecom, data and IT markets. To help solidify its leading position, Nokia said its Internet Communications unit would continue its acquisition policy.

Q: Qualcomm President and COO Richard Sulpizio has said you might use some of the $1.6
billion in cash and equivalents on the books to acquire GSM technology in order to build
dual-mode chipsets for both CDMA and GSM networks. Can you confirm this?
A: Yes, we?re looking around at possible acquisitions. We?ll work with someone who has GSM
rights. It could be a strategic relationship such as cross-licensing. We need to find a solution. A
strong enough acquisition is another way to go. We could use cash and stock. This is new path for
us -- we?ve never done acquisitions before.
