you know that I very much consider myself an amateur

Even amateurs can make a mean omelette, if they opt to break a few eggs.

I've made some good money off and on through short term trading. My main rules have been to stick to companies for which I have confidence in the long term growth prospects (mainly large cap semiconductor equipment companies in my case, since I used to work in the industry), and to never sell until I can at least make back the commission. I found it necessary to hold on to some of my trading positions through the 1998 slump, which was not especially pleasant, but I knew the industry would come back. I don't do "day trading" per se, relying on limit orders instead, although the market has occasionally moved fast enough for me to be in and out in the same day. This is all mainly for entertainment and a little "mad money", as it is in addition to my long term positions.

And, of course, I pay close attention to your dad's market outlook.
