The coalition would not have tolerated marching on Baghdad, the Saudis would have immediately withdrawn the right to base on their territory, the country would have either fallen apart, or required long- term occupation. Had we let it go, the Iranians would have fallen on Iraq, it is possible that Turkey would have attacked in the Kurdish sector, and there was a possibility of a wider conflagration. Had we held on, we would have been an occupying power in hostile territory for who know how long....
