Actually, Coherent makes a very wide variety of lasers. This is both good and bad in terms of developing a new laser. It is good, in that technology that is derived from one line of research (ex., eximer lasers for analytical purposes) may be applicable to another product (ex., eximer lasers for semiconductor production), and unless you are directly involved in the analytical lasers, you might not discover this technology. It is bad, however, in that you have to support research efforts in many different fields.

While I do not know the corporate history of how COHR decided to get into semiconductor production lasers, it probably developed based on their analytical eximer lasers as well as their experience with semiconductor inspection lasers. I am familiar with their analytical eximers which are often used in research labs. They are very good machines, and are one of the dominant players in this area.
