i have heard (rumor) that IBM is starting a new company or venture called world theater. it is to put large/regular/small, computer controlled, high definition, electronic billboards around the world.
i was told (rumor) that they plan to use cree leds.

i have not mentioned it before because i have not been able to verify it. can anyone help me substantiate this?

the following e-mail indicates it may already be underway.

the ir lady at cree is named fran. here is an e-mail she sent to a cree-clubber today.

Here is the email from Fran, Cree Inc.: she was responding to a question about polymer leds which is not a cree product.

"Polymer-based LEDs have been categorized within organic LEDs per Strategies Unlimited, a market research company based in Mountain View,
California. According to Strategies Unlimited, although widespread research is being conducted on organic LEDs, many problems remain including limited lifetime and conversion efficiency. Early
applications being examined include those in which lifetime requirements are modest including toys, watches, greeting cards to name a few.

One application in which Cree's SiC LEDs are being incorporated is into indoor and outdoor displays as well as LCD backlighting. Some examples
where our blue and green LEDs have been incorporated include the display screens at Cardiss Memorial Stadium for the World Rugby
Tournament in Wales, UK; the Formula One Car Race in Melbourne, Australia; the Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany; and for those that watch Monday Night Football, Chris Berman provides some halftime narration in front of a large screen which incorporates our blue and green LEDs and is televised from the EPSN Zone in New York City (where the screen is located). Additionally, our white conversion LEDs have been incorporated into one of the Nokia cellphone models, as well as the
backlighting for the Audi dashboard.
