According to a report on Yahoo Washington news this morning, in a November 10 speech, Clinton himself encouraged protestors to come to Seattle to protest. I missed that speech. According to the report, "Clinton is also being blamed [by US trade negotiators] for urging people opposed to the trade talks to come out and demonstrate in Seattle during a November tenth speech." So apparently he didn't think there what they were doing exerted enough pressure.

Also, there's no way US citizens can influence the delegates of 135 countries by writing letters, etc. This demonstration certainly got the attention of all the delegates. Some of that attention was certainly unwelcome and inappropriate. But the message got sent in a way it could never had gotten sent without the marches and protests.
