... local market is ambivalent about need for fiber
I think my local market is acting pretty slow for last mile fiber service, so I think even if they decide they want to do it there will be a gap of perhaps a year or more before they really get started. I don't think they will decide they want to unless Cisco or someone starts cutting into their sales.

<<<iii) wireless last mile solutions appear to be displacing need for metro deployment in a material way>>>

My two cents is that I would fear this one the most.

SBC is planning 25000 'microswitches' connected to the nearest TCO by fiber. Deployment scheduled over the next three years. That could be 100,000 miles of fiber (QWST has 18000 I think). More importantly, think how many cable ends that represents. The build out has hardly begun.

Damn, steven, that really was a good post. You have identified a possible point of inflection (when metro networks do/do not begin to be built out).

I really hope you will help us watch for indications one way or the other of 1) decreasing demand as backbone build out levels off 2) beginning of metro build out or indications that it will not occur at optimal rate to keep demand up.

Thanks.
