Although I have only read excerpts, Thomas Sowell wrote a book on the cultural dimension of development, and the persistence of traits, that is quite interesting. For example, there are many areas of Asia where commerce is dominated by the Chinese, who seem to be well- adapted to it. He suggests that, since we know little about changing cultural patterns, each group must find its niche. It is partly an argument against affirmative action: if the members of a particular group make better lawyers or doctors, typically, why try to artificially tilt the balance?
