SHANGHAI'S IT INDUSTRY OUTPUT INCREASES 23.5% OVER 1998 SHANGHAI- Shanghai's IT product manufacturing industry has experienced synchronous improvements in output and economic efficiency since the beginning of this year, thanks to the sustained development of new products.

TOKYO- Dai Nippon Printing Co. (TSE:7912) and Toshiba Corp. (TSE:6502) announced Thursday an agreement to develop and manufacture photomasks for semiconductors through a joint venture to be set up in March 2000.

Toshiba is a leader in efforts to develop technology that can create ever-finer circuit details on semiconductors. Dai Nippon is the world's largest producer of photomasks -- plates containing the circuit patterns that are exposed on a silicon wafer in integrated circuit production. By pooling their resources, the companies hope to become more competitive in the field.

JAPAN'S MITSUKOSHI TO USE EDI FOR TRADE WITH 6 COSMETICS COs TOKYO- Mitsukoshi Ltd. (TSE:8231) will begin in spring using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) at all its stores throughout Japan for orders and deliveries of six major cosmetics companies, company sources said Thursday.

MALAYSIA NOT INTERESTED IN ITA2 : TRADE MINISTRY OFFICIAL SEATTLE, Dec 2 Asia Pulse - Malaysia may not participate in the 2nd Information Technology Agreement or ITA2 proposed by the United States because it does not appear to benefit country's industries, said Datuk Asmat Kamaluddin, secretary-general of the international trade and industry ministry.

He said Malaysia took part in the first ITA because it included "a lot of our exports but ITA2 does not seem to benefit us."

CHINA'S LEGEND BUILDS NEW COMPUTER PLANT IN BEIJING PARK BEIJING, Dec 2 Asia Pulse - China's leading computer maker Legend has started constructing a new computer production base -- Legend Computer Mansion -- in the Beijing Zhongguancun Sci-Tech Park.

With a planned investment of 280 million yuan, the project is scheduled for completion at the end of next year, with a designed annual production capacity of two million Legend computers.

S KOREA'S SAMSUNG TO CARRY OUT PROJECTS WITH N KOREA SEOUL- Samsung Electronics (KSE:05930) said Thursday that it has signed a detailed economic co-operation contract with North Korea to advance software joint development project and manufacturing on consignment of electronic products.

The software joint development project, in which Samsung will invest around US$1 million, will focus on five softwares, development of a unified wordprocessor for both Koreas, software dealing with Chinese characters, game software, document summarising software and graphic library software.

S KOREA ELECTRONICS EXPORTS SEEN TO RISE 18.7% NEXT YR SEOUL - Korea's exports of electronic products next year are expected to grow 18.7 percent, led by liquid crystal displays, computers, semiconductor chips and other high value-added products, the Electronics Industries Association of Korea said Thursday.

The electronics industry is expected to post 86 trillion won (US$74.2 billion) in output, up 10 percent from this year, and exports are forecast to reach US$61.1 billion, up 18.7 percent.
