I don't think you're too far off the mark there. Of the various net storage startups do take a look at xdrive.com which has what appears to be the most elegant approach to the service.

Two things are required to make pervasive network storage a reality. The first, obviously, is wide proliferation of broadband access. The second, is widespread deployment of encrypted file systems so that the data which is resident in the network is only viewable by its owner and those authorized to share it. This is necessary for both the data owner as well as the service provider since it ensures the owner privacy and the service provider is insulated from liability over content.

It is important to realize that neither of these requirements will be fulfilled overnight. However, the trend is inexorable because the cost savings and productivity economics are compelling.
