That's a different class of experiment, eh? You're proposing measuring response to load at reference load levels.

In the limit, I would want to use one of these website tester systems ... that drives a website with programmable traffic ... but I ain't got that instrument to hand.

Maybe it'll be meaningful to play with audio or video streaming and some lesser trafficy apps ... IRC maybe ... and from that derive one or more reference load patterns which could be manually injected.

I'll play. NT5 server has a way cool software sniffer that let's me instrument any path through the stacks. If I run the java desktop on NT5 server with my DSL line and modem we might see some cleavage planes.
