The Census Bureau wants to fine you?! For not checking the race and sex boxes??!! I'm sure you reminded them the purpose of the census is (was?) to count heads and nothing more. In 1990 I refused to fill the form out completely. I merely acknowledged the presence of 2 adults in the house, as is specified in the Constitution. I caught no serious flak, they were just a little puzzled that I wouldn't cooperate and moved on. To hear that they now contemplate fining people is chilling indeed. It begs several questions. By whose authority can the Census Bureau fine a citizen? What police agency is responsible for enforcement? I have a sneaking suspicion the census worker (probably a volunteer) is just blowing smoke in an attempt to browbeat you.
