Re: your "smart money"-As a professional portfolio manager (albeit bonds rather than equities), I can certainly attest to the fallibility of so-called "smart money". In my nearly 20 years in that business, I've seen lots and lots of very smart people do things, that in hindsight, were incredibly stupid (i.e., David Askins in 1994, Long Term Capital Management in 1998). Methinks Castle Creek is guilty of being excessively concerned with trees, and being unable to see the damn forest. Just because they're a hedge fund does not mean they're infallible, or even particularly smart. But that's just my opinion.
