Bad judgement? Possibly.. But lord knows that most police forces actually spend VERY LITTLE time training for riots. Thus, errors in judgement are extremely likely. Who's to blame for that? The people who vote on their training budget. Ask people to do something they are not properly trained to do and you can expect mistakes. And even the best trained individuals often times screw up. Besides, these cops are afraid (thought they would never likely admit to it) and have to fight a war of intimidation with the street thugs. They have to appear "badder" than the other guys and absolutely show NO FEAR in dealing with them. In this type escalation, people often use excessive means, not only to intimidate the thugs, but to prop up their courage. The bottom line is that they were thrust AGAINST THEIR WILL into a situation where a bunch of violent thugs assaulted them and destroyed property. I'm really kinda sick of hearing about all the "terrible" abuses that were alledgedly inflicted by the police upon these illegal rabble-rousers. I have yet to hear of anyone having died as a result of police activities. (If someone had came after me with a bat or other weapon, I would have perforated them... end of story). But why is it that no one out here speaking up for the rights of the average Seattle citizen to be able to travel to work or walk through the affected area without risk of harm to their person? Where is the outrage against this illegal vandalism? Why isn't anyone speaking up for the businessmen who lost MILLIONS of dollars in damages and lost business because of this unwarranted act of violent lawlessness? Let's not feel too sorry for these thugs. There are others who's personal and property rights take a FAR HIGHER PRECEDENCE than those of individuals who sought to create mayhem and chaos. Excuse me for being just a bit conservative in this area. I'm all for people being able to peacefully protest. In fact, protests are a normal event here in our nation's capital and despite the endless delays and detours I'm forced to incur traversing the city, I accept it. Hell, I even accept it when Clinton's motorcade ties me up at a stop light for 15 minutes. But I will never accept resorting to violence and destroying personal property as a valid means of expresing one's 1st amendment rights. There right to protest ends when it infringes on anyone else's right to just be left alone. They're lucky I wasn't there in riot gear. Their would have been more than just a few bruises and scrapes.
