INFORMIX: Informix and Compaq announce new world record 1 TB TPC-H benchmark result on Compaq platform
* Record-Breaking Result of 6,514 QphH Demonstrates Extreme Power and Scalability for Large Decision Support Applications
MENLO PARK, Calif. -- Informix Corporation (NASDAQ: IFMX), the technology leader in enterprise database-powered solutions, and Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced it has delivered the industry's first 1 TB TPC-H benchmark result, on a Compaq platform. The Informix and Compaq 1 TB joint database solution is the first to conquer this new, demanding industry standard benchmark and stress test of decision support systems that query databases. The new industry standard 1 TB TPC-H benchmark was achieved with the Informix Extended Parallel Server (XPS) 8.3, Compaq Tru64 UNIX running on AlphaServer GS140 systems, and a large Compaq StorageWorks SAN.
The TPC-H benchmark models a real-world, decision-support environment of multiple users running ad hoc queries of a database and tests the system's ability to respond rapidly. The results of the TPC-H at 1 TB (1000 GB) benchmark demonstrate that the Compaq and Informix system expands to support the demands of large applications that include queries of equally large databases.
"The 1 TB TPC-H benchmark results underscore how Informix Extended Parallel Server leverages Compaq's Tru64 UNIX clustering and AlphaServer systems to meet the high performance, large capacity and extreme scalability requirements of today's business intelligence applications," said Charlie Chang, senior vice president and group executive, i.Intelligence group for Informix Software. "Informix customers benefit from the capabilities and strength of our jointly engineered database solutions."
"The new generation of NonStop Solutions requires the power to process and analyze more data faster than ever before, so that businesses have the information needed to more efficiently serve customer needs," stated John Nicholson, vice president, Customer Relationship Management and Business Intelligence, Compaq. "This benchmark, an industry first, demonstrates that Compaq's AlphaServer family, running Tru64 UNIX with Informix software, provides a proven solution for customers implementing high-end business intelligence solutions. Together, Compaq and Informix are able to bring the cost, management, and flexibility benefits of open systems into a realm once dominated by more expensive, mainframe-style solutions."
The Informix and Compaq 1TB database solution is the first to complete this new record-breaking benchmark by demonstrating the high-end performance and scalability of their solution to meet the most stringent customer requirements. By combining Informix and Compaq products, customers can expect a scalable and cost-effective database solution that provides greater capacity and superior processing power to manage, process and analyze more data. Many data warehousing, business intelligence and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) applications require this extreme power and scalability. Informix and Compaq customers also have the added benefit of the Cooperative Technical Support Agreement (CTSA), which provides worldwide support for e-business customers, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The CTSA enables customers to call either company's worldwide support centers and be assured of prompt and thorough problem resolution. The Cooperative Technical Support Agreement documents communication pipelines and procedures, mutual worldwide support contacts, and escalation procedures, all aimed at assisting and servicing the customer. The strong Compaq and Informix partnership delivers integrated, tested products as well as reliable customer support for a complete database solution. The recording breaking result was achieved using Informix XPS V8.30 running on Compaq AlphaServer GS140 equipped with 64 Alpha EV 6/700Mhz CPUs, 8MB cache, 128GB memory, 1770 drives together with the Compaq Tru64 UNIX V4.0F operating system and TruCluster 1.6 software. There were 14992GB of storage used in total for this benchmark. This solution delivered a query-per-hour rating of 6,514.1 QphH@1000GB at a price/performance of $2,170.55 QphH@1000GB. The power and throughput metrics were 8,829.8 QppH @1000GB and 4,805.7 QthH @1000GB. The total system configuration is currently available.
