The announcement about All Optical is exciting, from the links you can view the depth of Prof. Fischers works. I was unable to download these papers for further study but it is quite apparent that Prof. Fischers works have far ranging applications as they relate to three specific areas.

1. Manufacturing lasers, multiplexing lasers, he has done a ton of work on amorphous or doping process which have wide range of applications in reducing power required for semiconductor lasers.

2. The Behavior of light in fiber works could have implications in critical backplane technology in an all optical router, this will be a critical area going forward.

3. The other main body of his research appears to be with mirrors which portend novel ways of splitting the lightwave to wavelengths which could achieve important increases in bandwidth or by isolating particular wavelengths to achieve particular optical characteristics. Again these works could be important to Backplane switch router design an area where breakthroughs will be critical.

If there are folks who can get the actual papers we could have a better discussion.
