This is a very interesting move on the part of Seagate and a very interesting development in general. Recently Maxtor began marketing and NAS device in order to increase the market for their disk drives. XIOtech makes large disk arrays with several advantages over existing storage devices. It will be interesting to see if Seagate uses these capabilities to get into the SAN business.

XIOtech Moves Two Steps Closer to Complete Proactive and Automated Storage Management
New Tools in REDI Control Software Line Offer Event-Driven Storage Management And Web-Based Storage Monitoring
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- XIOtech® Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Seagate and a storage area network (SAN) pioneer, today announced that it has expanded its REDI(TM) Control software line to include new storage automation and monitoring tools. XIOtech's AutoScript and WebWatch tools bring its customers two steps closer to achieving complete proactive and automated storage management, which places continuous data and application availability within easy reach.

XIOtech's new AutoScript tool gives XIOtech MAGNITUDE(TM) system users the ability to create event-driven scripts that allow complex data management tasks to be performed automatically. The new WebWatch tool allows customers to monitor their MAGNITUDE hardware platform via the Internet.

``Our AutoScript and WebWatch tools were developed upon request from some of our largest customers who have chosen to implement our MAGNITUDE system for critical 24/7 operations,'' said Richard Blaschke, executive vice president of marketing at XIOtech. ``The new tools provide specific, proactive measures to improve uptime, and they complement our virtualized storage architecture which maximizes data, system and application availability by allowing most storage management tasks to be performed online.''

According to Steve Duplessie, founder of the analyst firm Enterprise Storage Group, ``The biggest problem users face with storage is management. Anything that automates processes and allows a user to manage more storage with less people is welcome. AutoScript takes the reactionary guesswork out of managing a XIOtech environment. We think customers will love this.''

The AutoScript tool is a feature of XIOtech's REDI Control Scheduler, an automated task scheduling application that improves system availability by reducing the need for human intervention for storage administration tasks. The AutoScript tool provides MAGNITUDE users the ability to create scripts that can launch various activities within the MAGNITUDE system based on events that occur either in that system or in outside applications. Examples of activities that can be launched include mirroring data volumes and reassigning data volumes to other servers. This event-based storage management tool not only offers users greater data availability by removing human intervention in performing regular complex tasks, but it also provides users with a great deal of efficiency in their operations and allows them to spend less of their time on day-to-day activities and focus on long-term projects.

For example, in XIOtech's Enterprise Solutions Lab, the AutoScript tool has been used to create an end-to-end automatic backup of an Oracle database with no downtime in any of the attached applications and systems. Using the AutoScript tool, a script was written that created a mirror of the Oracle database storage volume. When the mirror was complete and in sync with the original volume, the mirror was broken, and the mirrored volume was mounted to a server that then copied the data to tape. Once the AutoScript tool was in place, the end-to-end backup of the Oracle database from disk to tape was completely automatic.

The WebWatch tool is a feature of REDI Control Manager, XIOtech's remote configuration and monitoring software for the MAGNITUDE hardware platform. WebWatch allows users to monitor operating characteristics, environmental specifications, performance data and system alerts on the MAGNITUDE system from anywhere in the world in html format.

The REDI Control Scheduler with AutoScript is available today for U.S. list $3,333, and REDI Control Manager with WebWatch is available today for U.S. list $6,667. Users can purchase the REDI Control Suite of products, which includes both AutoScript and WebWatch for U.S. list $8,667.

XIOtech will be participating at TECHXNY/PC Expo 2001 in New York City, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, June 25-29, and will be located in the Microsoft Partner Pavilion (Booth #3912) and the Novell Partner Pavilion (Booth #2422).
