For a good example, check out the update I just posted on the 1999 Roaring Twenty thread. The leading gainers from our 20 stocks there are up over 300-400%; the biggest losers are down 50%.

If you take $10K and lose half in a long position, that's a bummer but life isn't over. If you short $10K of a screamer and end up in the hole $40K you have a serious problem.
