Rather than snarling at Del, JLA, think about the fire on Mt. Desert Island and how long it is taking for the forests to recover. What makes sense to me is what many of the major paper companies are doing today rather than clearcutting old growth stands--namely, selective cutting, tree farms--which may not be pretty but do provide the lumber and wood supplies, and increasingly innovative ways of using wood fiber. In diapers and sanitary products, for example, the skillful use of polymers can cut down on the need for fluff pulp by making the pulp that is used more efficient as a conductor of moisture....

We can preserve what is precious without destroying the ability to keep people employed. I also endorse what I have seen people do: purchase themselves tracts of old growth and donate them to the Nature Conservancy.

M'Gawd..We agree again ;-) however..My Mother owns a 12
acre lot in the country. The state split it from one corner to anothe to build SR 21 for $100. ;-( Then they took a Fieldstone Rock Quarry on another corner for a Turnpike'
standard $100. Jennings Randolph...probably the most powerful Senator ever in Congress made damn sure the majority of the State of W.Va was either a State or National
Forest..Now the big boyz are strip mining in these forests and not
required to reclaim the land..?????

<btw> Lightening usually destroys the old forests to make way for the new growth...Natures frand design...:-)

I don't think Del's reply was snot-nosed or pompous at all. I do think your post was illogical. Are you aware that old growth forest are NOT renewable resources? Do you have a world view where greed is your king, where creating jobs and otherwise benefiting humanity is preferable to saving old-growth forests as sanctuaries for animal life and for the humans who visit them and are re-energized by them? Is nothing sacred to you? Do you care whether your children and grandchildren have a viable environment and are able to enjoy the natural wonders of the world? The adjectives pompous and snot-nosed do come to mind, but certainly not for the environmentalists who are struggling to assure that your gene pool survives our mismanagement of the earth's resources . . .
