Database rivals in $1.39bn stock swap
Grant Butler

In the United States, database competitors, Informix and Ardent
Software, have agreed on a stock swap. The new entity is valued at about
$US880 million ($A1.39 billion). Informix makes corporate database
programs, while Ardent's area is data-management software. Both
companies have Australian operations. Informix's Australian clients
include AC Nielsen, Macquarie Bank, Telstra and the New South Wales
Police. Informix has been working to exploit the growth of the Internet
by creating software targeting electronic commerce businesses.
Both
listed on the Nasdaq, just prior to the merger being announced on 1
December 1999, Ardent's shares added $US00.56 to $US26.25 while Informix
lost $US00.125 to $US11.
