Note that I suggested that I give myself some leeway in exactly when I choose to sell something. If it's running, I'll usually let it run until it either consolidates or breaks. Those are usually opportune times for rebalancing a portfolio. And I'm not necessarily talking about days or even weeks. Last time I held a very large CSCO position I let it go for several months before I decided that the opportunities were better elsewhere. (In that case, the immediate "opportunity" was cash, and the longer term one was some of the semi-caps.)

I am much stricter in the application of my rules with regards to small cap stocks, where the risk of a sudden, huge collapse (or for shorts, a huge jump) is always much higher.
