December 4, 1999-big news from Ottawa Sun- Linux lovers join forces for software battle By KEVIN BELL -- Money Editor Two companies that have been bloodied in battles with Microsoft Corp. joined forces yesterday to kick back at the software giant. Corel Corp. and Inprise Corp. announced a strategic alliance yesterday to accelerate the commercialization of Linux, a computer operating system that some think will soon rival Microsoft's Windows systems. Under the alliance, the two companies will co-operate in research and development of Corel's Linux office software and Inprise's applications for the Linux OS. 'BOMBED' BY MICROSOFT Inprise grew out of software maker Borland, which was crushed in a battle with Microsoft in the early 1990s. "Microsoft bombed it," said Kevin Cornell, Inprise's Canadian president. "That was the steamroller that went right over Borland." But the rejuvenated company sees the Corel Linux alliance as a way for the two companies to fight back. Corel lost a widely publicized battle with Microsoft several years ago when it acquired WordPerfect, only to see it lose market share to Microsoft's Word. In an interview yesterday, Cornell said he backs a claim made earlier this week by Corel chief executive Michael Cowpland that revenues from Linux products could quickly accelerate to reach the same point as sales of Windows-based products. "That's what we're hoping for. That's the target," he said. "This is such a rapidly changing marketplace. An erosion of the Microsoft world could happen very quickly." A study by International Data Corp. projects that the Linux desktop OS market could double in the next several years, from a 2.1% share to 4.7% by 2003.
