I was on the spot when the Russians invaded Chechnya, in December, 1994, and I stayed on, for months & months. One of the "funny" things about the experience is that I had arrived, in October, not expecting a war, in a short red jacket, suitable for the fall months. Well, I was forced to run around in that red jacket all through the war. It was if I had pinned on my back a sign saying: "Shoot Me!" Other journalists there dubbed me "The Travelling Target."
