Perhaps some @Home users can chime in here. Is the splash
screen avoidable?

Yes. You can avoid it by changing your start page in preferences. Do i use the @HOME page? Yes, when looking for CBC or FOX video news.

Here is the litmus test however: Take away the content and I still love my @HOME. Take away the speed and I will go elsewhere.

So, does that mean that @HOME doesn't need content? Or does it mean it needs better content and killer apps (like a virtual desktop and smart browsing)?

Regards
Jay

>> misdirected from a pipe shop to a content whore

I completely agree from my own personal value system. I would much prefer to see ATHM function as a premium pipe service ... developing and leading the heterogeneous web ... bringing user and providers together ... taking a premium from both ends.

>> the Internet audience ... who really want the passive spoon fed TV model

As in AOL? The passive, spoon fed model is demonstrably successful, both from the perspective of AOL's dominion and from that of grandma's attitude ... she never wants to understand or learn ... she just wants to pick options.

I don't see the tension between the pipe and spoon models ... they are synergistic, complimentary.

It's only when you throw them into the same organization that tension arises ... resources and values. I agree that that's ATHM's biggest mistake.

They should be 100% facilitating AOL ... and everyone else on a level playing field ... and concentrating on raising the level of that field above everyone else.

I think they got distracted. I think their eyes got bigger than their digestive system. Talking to Case, AT&T, etc, etc ... too many pulls in different directions ... their focus became diffused. It happens, heaven knows.

When they couldn't strike a deal with Case, they ought to have walked ... trusting that Case would come knocking in a year ... happy to take the deal.

Now they are in feud city ... conflicting natural allegiances.

They can't offer the level playing field that would suck in the outsiders without pissing off the insiders ... in so many areas ... TV, voice, web content.

Yuk, what a mess.

They're escalated the game to the point where they have to outplay everyone simultaneously. Ouch, ouch.

And by not keeping their head in the cockpit, feeling out for the edge of the fast internet envelope, they've let some folks start niches that really ought to have been theirs. Akami/Sandpiper is a perfect example.

I lay it mostly at TJ's door ... the mess reflects his personality needs, I think. It's just how the guy wants to move through life ... wide focus ... not narrow focus, head down ... needs lots of connections ... needs to be boss ... more of a player than someone with a true commitment.

Still ... they are in a very strong position ... there are so many ways for them to win ... and so many levels they might stabilize at.

And they know all this ...

Thanks for the Gilder background ... second time today ... better subscribe to his newsletter, eh?

I envy your RR. I'm happy with my fat DSL pipe extended to me by some very sharp guys ... very techie ... very proud of their triple redundant bone connections, etc ... little local ISP that got bought by Winstar.

Ray...fwiw, I have @H and use an express trading window for
my opening page. In fact, I generally never see @H content whatsoever. Going directly to my favorites list---which I use
as a portal ( cannot figure why more people don't do the same)
enables me be bypass any ads whatsoever. It's great. Makes it easy
to forget about yahoo, aol or any search or content site including
@home. Give me speed, speed and a little more speed, thank you.
