Any help will be muchly appreciated.

But,

He walked the line, wondering if she would bother to look at him. As expected, she kept her nose in the air. As the blade slid to the stops, he could hear the "whisk - thunk" of her ignoring him. He wondered, "who greases those pulleys?"

Am I out of line here?
