Re Prof. Fischer: A WAG from a guy who got a "D" in the quarter of Physics at Stanford that dealt with electro-magnetic and wave theory: I see the most likely candidate as a passive pure optical switch as this seems most relevant to MRVC. This was the issue I tried to raise with my post several months ago with excerpts from the July Gilder Report that got zapped into a black hole. Gilder discussed two types of optical switches: liquid crystals from Chorum and micro mirrors from Astarte Fiber Networks. If any of you have access to the Gilder Report, go back and read this issue.(They are all archived on Gilder's site.) If you don't, I'll be happy to PM relevant excerpts to anyone who wants them.
There is a developing field of storage using holograms. I stumbled upon an article somewhere on SI about this and printed it out. I'll try to find it and post the URL.
A third area that I spotted in one of the references copied below was image compression. Could he be on to a way to compress and transmit images as lambdas instead of electrons?
