My opinion is that CPQ needs to leverage the internet content providers and be a service company and infrastructure provider. If they had kept AV and tried to develop it, they would have been placing a bet that their approach to that market would succeed - since by owning AV, they pretty much eliminated partnership deals with anyone else in that space.

By selling AV to CMGI, they get preferential deals with one of the strong brands, but still are able to attract and support a range of other partnerships.

The future for CPQ will be in providing enabling technology, not in providing the end user internet services. In that context, AV would have been a millstone.

I think your analysis is penny wise and pound foolish...

Re :Alta Vista could have come to market this Fall, it could have raised the same amount of money it will raise in its CMGI enhanced version this coming Spring, the prospect would have saved the COMPAQ stock price from descending to $18 or even the low $20's

in other words a search engine is the thing that makes or breaks a multi B$ company? I fail to see this (no yhoo stocks or yhoo-garbage-like ones in my portfolio please...)
What's the big deal around a piece of software that you can get for free or almost. Just like i don't buy the idea that palm is rescuing 3com. Nor that linux will displace M$FT anywhere near being significant.

But of course these days the .com effect is much sexier than p&l stuff.
