Mike: Phone.com - the Unwired Planet - had the technology in house - the expertise.

The company made the decision for purposes of long term growth to open all up to all comers by being the behind the scenes force to promote WAP as an "open standard".

This was done with the participation of companies many times the size of Unwired Planet.

Was this a good approach?

Only time will tell.

It is diifferent.

And all this was with the idea that Phone.com could make its money form servers and services to the companies who were participating in the "open" standard which was in reality Phone.com's creation.

All this is just as I understand it. This may not be new, but if it is not, I am not sure who did this earlier. Perhaps you will enlighten me. And perhaps Linux is the model - if so, Phone.com is following. But a difference is that Phone.com itself supplies appropriate servers and services. Linux does not.
