Mike,

It's actually a natural progression for Schlumberger to be in this business. Years ago, they acquired a company which provided service station equipment, included in that product mix were self service pumps and automated retail systems. Smart cards are merely the next generation of offering a hassle-free retail experience for customers.

As just one example, it's interesting that Schlumberger, the oil company that gets the stuff out of the ground and the ocean, has a smart card division. They are getting contracts from universities and cities that are using smart cards for things like parking meters so no one has to carry cash and no one has to retrieve the cash.

mike,
any idea whose technology schlum is using for the cards?

btw schlum has a rmbs division and has established several rmbs consulting offices around the world in the past year.

Mike,

I imagine there will be several huge games going on at the same time related to smart cards.

Gemstar has intellectual property relating to smart cards. Of what I know one patent is for the storage of time-sensitive electronic coupons that are either used at the consumer's convenience or expire at a predetermined date. Notice all the STBs with smart card slots?

Stew

Smart cards will some day be ubiquitous, just as dumb credit cards are today. Figuring out the gorilla and royalty plays are something I've never taken the time to do. I imagine there will be several huge games going on at the same time related to smart cards.

Verifone, the credit card authorization firm acquired by HP a year or so ago, is/was big in smart cards in Europe and Australia. Since being acquired by HP, the division has experienced turnover in management. The bank smart card trials in NYC over a year ago were not considered successful.

With gas pumps and grocery stores finally accepting cards in lieu of cash, maybe smart cards can begin to take off. Verifone was trying to develop a system to allow people to download cash to their smart card via there PC in their home so that there would be no need to get cash from an ATM.
