Just some thoughts re:OPEC today. It certainly is not the same OPEC as the days of the boycott and the recent failures to cut production.

Two things that are different. The Gulf War brought the Saudi's and other Gulf states firmly under the US/NATO/IMF "protective" umbrella. Kind of like buying protection from the Godfather - they're in the "family."

The other thing that's different is the present leadership in the "friendly" OPEC countries now have a lot of their capital invested in the US and European economies, markets, etc. and are more partners in making decisions. Those who don't cooperate with the Godfather, like Iraq, are punished.

Anyway IMHO those who run the USA are fully supportive of this OPEC move. If they weren't, they could easily influence any OPEC member to announce that they will excuse themselves from the agreement for reasons of overriding national interest and produce oil like there's no tomorrow. Isn't that what the CIA is for? Hell, they may be enforcing compliance with the cuts. (g)
