<<"Optical data storage technologies, originally investigated as a means for providing storage systems that could withstand the rigorous environment of space, hold the promise for the next technical breakthrough in this field." >>

And what a breakthrough it would be!

Tired of waiting for your PC to load all it's software?
Tired of the time it takes to do backups? (Data transfer improvements)

Tired of switching CDs (or even DVDs)?
Tired of searching through stacks of diskettes, CDs, etc to find the file you want? (Capacity Improvements)

Tired of the worry of losing your data if your lap top gets jostled hard or (mercy) falls off the table? - or a too hard landing on Mars? (RELIABILITY improvements)

Want your laptop battery to last longer? (power reductions)

Want to carry less weight or pack more storage capacity for less weight (Size, weight reductions)

For enterprises, tape sequential storage can now be done away with for large files (assuming the storage is read/write/erasable). Think of the improvements in processing speed and operational considerations that implies.

This is not to say that this IS what the new AO will be doing, but this is apparently one of the (many?) possibilities, which could change the world.

When you think of what this research could lead to, there could actually be many future startups/spinoffs to address specific products/markets - and MRV would have a piece of them all. What a concept MRVC is onto!
