How Reghu became a doctor

jipmer.org

Dr Hardas Singh was the 'roughest and toughest hard drinking man you ever saw'. He happened to be our bacteriology teacher.

On the way back from his daily evening quota of tennis, and an uncertain quota of whiskey, his vespa scooter tossed the burly sardar into a ditch on the roadside; a toss that left him paralysed below the neck.

This wounded lion lay immobile in the hospital bed for some weeks, moving the only thing he was happy to move - his tongue. He made remarkable recovery, thanks to the dedicated nursing care of his thin, sad faced, wheat complexioned magnanimous and determined wife. This submissive Sardarni, was beaten black and blue each time he returned home drunk from Cercle de Pondicherry.

With her ministrations in his state of helplessness and total dependency on her, made him a loving father and husband. As he recovered, he took evening walks around the campus with his illiterate wife. With her height, sharp curved nose, thin lips, chiseled cheek and jaw line, she would have been a stunner if allowed to dress up.

In one of his earlier classes we rubbed sterile cotton swabs on different parts of our body and put them into different test tubes to be incubated at 36 degrees C for 24 hours. Next day the results were examined under the microscope. It was found that the swab from the mouth had the highest growth of bacteria. The anus and vagina had the lowest growth. Hardas Singh explained the results thus:

"When you go out with your girl friend tonight, remember where to kiss." We burst into uproarious laughter. And when he said, "Quiet", the whole class fell quiet like a well trained pet that loved and feared its master. No wonder he was the second most feared man on the campus
.....

When we held a farewell party on his being posted to Banaras Hindu University Medical College, he was so moved by our little farewell speeches that the brute wept. At first we did not notice the tears. When he took out his handkerchief and pressed it over his eyes and said,

"It is foolish of me to weep. But I cannot help it. I am really moved."

We were touched too.

He may not have thought that his students would speak of him as a good person, let alone be looked upon with affection. If our farewell had any impact on his subsequent attitude towards people, and life in general, is not known.

When he came to Pondicherry, he was a loud, arrogant, abusive drunkard who beat up his wife. When he left Pondicherry for the last time, he had become a strict yet gentle teacher, a loving husband, affectionate father, teetotaler and handicapped. His American accent and penchant for X-rated jokes may never change.....
