I personally can see no reason for conceding mind to my
fellow men and denying it to animals ... I at least cannot
doubt that the interests and activities of animals are
correlated with awareness and feeling in the same way as my
own, and which may be, for aught I know, just as vivid.

~Lord (Walter Russel) Brain (1895-1966)
I really do not know what he did. But I like how he thought.

As far as Safire- he's one of my favorite 'reads' and his quote-book (along with his brother) is well used here.
from his book (Words of Wisdom):

Harltey's Second Law: Never sleep with anyone crazier than yourself.
~ Arthur Bloch
(what's H's 1st?)(Is it Marilee Hartley?)

You can also tell I never follow what he preaches...good grammar.
