There is a book called "An Embarrassment of Riches" about the Dutch- and how they grew extremely wealthy on trade. Any society that has the ability to overconsume - will, at least based on historical data. Look at Greece, and Rome, Egypt and the British Empire, the Chinese, any culture you wish- when power and abundance are combined- over consumption seem to be the result. We will consume to the limits of our capabilities- I wonder if it is built in to us- as it is in other animals. Such a drive to consume is great in the lean times but it ill prepares us for peace and plenty.
