''You are seeing a containment of interest rates that is supportive of the
equity market,'' said Joseph Battipaglia, chief investment officer of Gruntal
& Co. ''Whenever we come to an important number like today's, you will
see this kind of reaction, when the bond market once again rallies and the
stock market moves even higher.''

Mr. Battipaglia said another reason for the sharp rise in stock prices was
the waning of fears of computer problems linked to the year 2000. The
problems have not yet materialized, he said, and investors are piling into
computer-related shares in anticipation of even stronger gains next year.

There are a number of plays that are a consequence of an IPO. To name a few:
1. Similar companies
2. End of the quiet period
3. End of the lock up period or other reason for selling
4. Back door plays when the IPO is partially owned by another firm
Are these plays a sure thing? Certinly not. But many traders are checking these types of plays at every opportunity. They frequently work well.

Pammaji, RHAT came out in August. I bought ADSP as a Linux sympathy play and doubled it. This was the post that started it. Mike and Jason woke everyone up on the thread.

The next several posts show the excitement as it doubled.
Having seen sympathy plays work, I see NPTL as one. Not sure why it dropped from Friday's high of $7.50 so I'll stay out. The key was to get at $4 not $6.

a stock rising because an IPO of simmilar business is brought public...does anyone have anyone solid recent examples?

MSTG ran with the EGAN / KANA IPO's.

Check the charts of these companies and others in the same sectors and you will see it happens often.
