Companies won't ditch the major investment banks because of the belief that post-IPO coverage from the investment bank's analyst combined with the investment bank's retail distribution to institutions is necessary for any money losing tech. co. to attain the market cap. it needs to survive. For many of these companies, I believe that having a large market cap. is an essential strategic asset for various reason. For the company, it is essentially money in the bank. Scientific Safeguard recently made the choice to offer its shareholders substantially less participation in its IPO's in order to do business with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, which require control of most of the IPO shares and where they go as a condition for doing business.
