Mr. Jeff Brooks reports
Image Power is moving forward in the development of its new JPEG 2000 codec following the approval of JPEG 2000 Part 1 committee draft (CD) during the recent International Organization for Standardization (ISO) meetings. At the same meetings, JBIG2, the new standard for bitonal image compression, reached final draft international standard (FDIS). Image Power has already incorporated JBIG2 into its FaxPC service offering, and markets its JBIG2 software development kits (SDKs) to companies worldwide.
The approval to CD for JPEG 2000 Part I signifies that the technology for the standard is finalized and ready for implementation. The committee reports that the JPEG 2000 Part 1 CD will go for international ballot immediately.
The ISO meetings also established three new parts to the JPEG 2000 standard, including the development of motion JPEG 2000, a conformance testing group, and a group dedicated to the development of JPEG 2000 reference software that will accelerate the adoption of JPEG 2000 in industry. Dr. Faouzi Kossentini was appointed project editor and will lead a group of international experts in developing a reference implementation, to become known as Part 5 of the JPEG 2000 standard.
"Two thousand will be the year of the proliferation of JPEG 2000 and JBIG2 products in the marketplace," commented Dr. Kossentini, professor at the University of British Columbia, head of the Canadian delegation and technical adviser to Image Power. "We look forward to an exciting year for companies developing JPEG 2000 and JBIG2 products."
"The company's joint development with UBC, announced in November, will be one of the first implementations of the current JPEG 2000 standard," said Stephen Swift, president of Image Power. "We are working to finalize the code now, and we are on schedule for the development of a commercial codec -- which will include Windows DLLs, OCXs and browser plug-ins -- during the first quarter of next year."
The ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 working groups met Dec. 6 to 10 in Maui, Hawaii. The meetings are closed-door sessions for participating members of national bodies only. The last meeting of the ISO working groups, the largest meeting in the history of the SC 29 committee, was sponsored by Image Power and UBC in Vancouver in July of this year.
