Hello Nathan - Interesting topic <<I am more interested in using commercial applications like rendering networks, zooming into a particular node based on overlaying a 3d space with a GIS (geographics Information) or sky as a backdrop etc.>> Rendering networks in 3D would probably be a very desired tool - take Visio Enterprise and move it into the 3D space. Where do I get that puppy?!? Interpret statistics and map them in a 3D space for monitoring networks in realtime or use 3D modeling for traffic (trend) analysis!?! Another idea - intruder detection. Allowing a network specialist/admin type to monitor network traffic in a 3D mapped representation of their network with "alerts" set to present thresholds. One could then read real-time statistics as well as navigate the network choosing to "zoom" in on "problem" areas (places on the network where thresholds have been reached or are close).
